The Chicago Cubs are professional major league baseball team. They play on Chicago’s North Side. They are in the National League’s central division. The Chicago Cubs are owned by the Tribune Company and managed by Lou Piniella. John McDonough and Jim Hendry are the team’s president and general manager, respectively.
There are actually two major league teams in Chicago, Illinois. In addition to the Chicago Cubs, there is also the Chicago White Sox, who play in the American League. Both the Cubs and the White Sox are charter members of their leagues. They have also both won championships for their leagues, with the Cubs scoring theirs in 1876, to be followed a quarter of the century later by the White Sox. They were each referred to as the “White Stockings” when winning their first championships.
The Cubs were once owned by the Wrigley family, famous for manufacturing chewing gum. One eccentric deed reputedly orchestrated by P.K. Wrigley, who owned the team during the Great Depression, was the hiring of a man to put an “evil eye” hex on opposing players for an entire season. The procedure allegedly failed, although the man was paid several thousand dollars.
Another unusual maneuver by Wrigley, this one orchestrated many years later, was the institutionalization of a coach rotation system among the team and its minor leagues and farm system. This was tried out during the 1961 and 1962 seasons, but failed to have any noticeable effect on the team’s performance, as the Cubs lost more games than they won during that period.
Al Goldis, the team’s player development chief, once instituted a strange program of his own, requiring the players to practice their stance, coordination, and swing on top of a twenty-five rubber tires and a stack of two by fours.
Tragedy struck the team in 1932. Violet Valli, a femme fatale, was known to be suicidal and psychotic. She walked in to the apartment of Billy Jurges, who was the Cubs’ shortstop, and shot him in the course of a confrontation. This even inspired Bernard Malamud to write the novel The Natural.

If you carefully scrutinize a good player’s swing—a player whose golf handicap is in the single digits—you’ll notice something odd. There’s a flat spot at the bottom of the swing arc, just as the club strikes the ball. This flatness isn’t an optical illusion. It’s real. And it’s significant. Launch angle is critical to generating power and accuracy from the tee box. It also fosters solid contact .
Every tee shot has an optimum launch angle off the tee—no matter what the club. This angle depends almost entirely on clubhead speed at impact. Driving the ball off the tee with the right clubhead speed and launch angle produces a ball flight that helps golfers gain distance and achieve accuracy. Unfortunately, players with high golf handicaps don’t always understand the relationship between clubhead speed and launch angle.
Defining Launch Angle
Launch angle, as I’ve explained in many golf tips, is the angle at which a ball leaves the clubface. Launch angle results primarily from two factors: ball speed and ball spin. Correctly adjusting one or both increases driving distance and accuracy. That in turn helps cut some strokes from your scores and your golf handicap. In other words, if you really want to bomb one down the fairway, you must hit the ball at the perfect launch angle. Below are some keys to doing so:
1. Check Your Grip For Square Contact
To drive your ball straight and far, you must make square contact with the ball. To do that, you need the right grip—one allowing you to return the clubhead to the ball squarely time after time after time. The best grip for that is a neutral one. A weak grip turns the hands too far to the left (right, for a left-hander) producing a slice. A strong grip turns the hands too far to the right (left, for a left-hander), generating a hook. But a neutral grip aligns the hands with the club head, increasing your chances of making solid contact at the optimum launch angle.
2. Get A Feel For Impact
In addition to a neutral grip, develop a feel for impact. Here’s a good drill for that:
Set up a chair in front of you. Position the back of the chair so that it’s aligned where you would position the ball on the tee, with the back facing forward. Assume your address position. Turn away from the chair just as you would on your backswing. Swing down, hitting the back of the chair squarely with the palm of your right hand (left for lefties).
This drill ingrains the feel of impact and develops a good turn away from the ball—just like they teach in golf lessons.
3. Balance Address To Predetermine Launch Angle
Your address position predetermines your position at impact. It’s critical you have a balanced address. If your weight is too far forward, you increase your chances of hitting the ball with an upward, glancing blow. If your weight is set too far back, you’ll hit down on the ball, popping it up. Distribute your weight evenly and you’ll hit the ball squarely.
4. Ease Into Swing
Staying on the correct swing plane is essential to hitting longer, more accurate drives. To determine if you’re on the proper swing plane, hold the club in front of you, chest high, with your arms fully extended. Lazily, begin swinging the club back and forth. Lower the club until it starts swishing the ground. That’s the proper swing plane for that club. It’s also a good tempo to play at and swing at.
These four tips won’t turn you into Phil Mickelson. Nor will they eliminate the need for some people to take golf lessons. But they will help you gain additional yardage off the tee and achieve pinpoint accuracy consistently. If you’re serious about lowering your golf handicap, gaining extra yardage is something worth attaining.

I live in Oregon and my boyfriend lives hundreds of miles away in California. He is planning to move up here in a year. We both agreed to be faithful to one another. But it is very hard being away from him for so long. What can we both do to make this relationship work until he is able to move?
There’s two things you can do. Move out with him till he does. Or.. Break up. It Won’t work trust me. you will never know what hes doing/ lying about.. no matter what he says. you will drive yourself crazy.. So try moving out with him.
I’m gonna go to a Halloween party this month and need to start figuring out something sexy to wear. I was thinking that I should buy a costume from the store I buy my sexy lingerie from , they also sell sexy Halloween costumes there but I don’t know what to wear. I love cats so maybe I could be a sexy cat but I want some opinions.
The reason why I ask is because there’s a prize for best dressed at the party and I love competing.

In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, 570 miles east of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, lies an island filled with pink sand beaches, pastel cottages and quintessential British traditions. With a landmass of only 21 square miles, it is one of the smallest territories in the world. Bermuda actually consists of around 140 islands, of which 8 of these are linked by bridges to form a continuous fishhook shaped area of land that runs 22 miles in length and only 2 miles across at its widest point. This is the Bermuda that most everyone knows because the other islands are uninhabited and some are only rocks.
Bermuda is a different island in many ways from those that you generally think about such as the Caribbean. It is very polite and slightly restrained in the sense that you won’t find laid-back locals wandering around barefoot and offering you piña coladas. It is somewhat formal in dress, as you’ll see the female residents in stockings and heels and the men in jackets, ties, Bermuda shorts, and knee socks despite the beautiful weather. Golf and tennis are popular pastimes and you will find that most visitors, as well as Bermudians, are over 40. It is a wonderful and charming island that offers many things to see and do with great places to go.
Bermuda weather is very temperate, not too hot and not too cold. It is a semi-tropical island that doesn’t have a rainy season and there is no one month that receives an excess of rain. Showers can be heavy at times but you’ll find that the skies clear quickly and that it doesn’t usually affect your outdoor plans. The temperature rarely rises above 85 F, (29.5 C) perfect for sun bathing, swimming and all water sports and there is always a cool breeze at night. May to October are the warmest months with an average high of 82 F and an average low of 74 F. The coldest part of the year runs from January to March with average highs of 69 F and lows 60 F.
The Department of Tourism promotes 2 seasons for Bermuda weather; summer’s “beach and sizzle” and winter’s “golf and spa.” In summer, the island is filled with activities; hotel barbecues and evening dances to set off your daytime sightseeing trips, and the public beaches never close. During the off-season which runs from Nov-Mar, you’ll find that the pace slows down significantly. Some of the sightseeing, dive, snorkeling, and water-skiing boats are dry-docked and only taxis operate tours of the island. There are also a few hotels and restaurants that will close, although having said that, most hotels in Bermuda do stay open and you’ll find the prices slashed up to 40%. This is a great time to travel with perfect weather for golf and tennis, you can still rent boats, tour the islands and the best part? You can travel Bermuda and take full advantage of the uncrowded beaches, shops, restaurants, and walking tours and totally enjoy the beautiful sunny days.
If you’re looking to rent a car while you travel Bermuda, you are going to be out of luck, as there are no car rentals available there! You can get around with public buses, ferries, rent a moped or scooter, you can use taxis – or even hire a horse and carriage. The bus system is fantastic, running on schedule all day, although there is no late system. Exact change, tokens or tickets are required. Tokens can be purchased at some hotels and guest houses, sub-post offices, and at the Central Terminal in Hamilton on Church Street. You can also get multi-day Transportation Passes for three or seven days that allow for unlimited bus trips which will save you some money. Metered taxis can be found at the airport and most large hotels and they can also double as tour operators if you want to put together your own sightseeing tour of the island. Bermuda taxi operators are among the world’s finest and their knowledge and commentary can make for an unforgettable tour. You can rent them by the day, hour or mile. All taxis are metered and the tariff is fixed by law so rates are the same for all: $4 for the first mile, $1.40 for each additional mile and higher rates after 10 pm. Ferries are a scenic way to get around and can sometimes be much faster than the bus. They connect Hamilton with Paget, Warwick and the Somerset/Dockyard area. Moped rentals are available by the 1/2 day, day, week and long-term. The cost varies according to length of rental and type of cycle. Horse and Carriage tours are a nice way to see Bermuda. By day the drivers will point out the sights, and for the evenings it is very romantic.
The currency here is the Bermuda dollar and it has a 1-1 ratio to the US dollar. Both currencies are equally accepted at all establishments but the US dollar is the currency of choice because unlike the Bermuda dollar, it’s exchangeable everywhere in the world. Average room prices vary as such: Low – $100/120 Mid – $120/180 High – $200+, average meal prices are: Low – $5/10 Mid – $10/25 High – $25-30. All hotels in Bermuda are subject to a 7.25% hotel tax which is added to your bill at check-out and there is also a departure tax but this is included in the price of your air ticket. When it comes to tipping, most restaurants add a 15% service charge to your bill, so just check to see if it is there so that you don’t end up tipping twice and of course, if it’s not there, this is the average. Hotels also generally add a service charge and this is 10%. For taxis, a tip of around 10% is average.
Bermuda has more sights to see than you will be able to visit in a single vacation, here are a just a few of the highlights. Visit the awesome underground of Bermuda, with one of the highest concentrations of limestone caves in the world, it offers a dream world that has even been the inspiration for many creative achievements including Hensen Associates “Fraggle Rock” muppets. Make sure to take a visit to the Crystal Caves or Leamington Caves, both are along the Harrington Sound Road. The Royal Naval Dockyard which began in 1809, can be seen today restored as an entertainment and shopping complex, with restaurants, crafts market, arts centre, Bermuda Maritime Museum, historic Commissioner’s House, cinema, and the Clocktower shopping mall. The Botanical Gardens which feature over 1000 varieties of plant life spread out over 36 acres of landscape and are open all year from sunrise to sunset. Take time to visit the Bermuda Aquarium, Natural History Museum and Zoo where you can take self guided tours if you choose and learn about Bermuda’s beginnings, whaling industry, captivating undersea exploration, and fragile environment. The aquarium, museum and zoo are internationally recognized as a centre for the preservation and reintroduction of threatened species.
If diving and snorkeling are your thing, you will find some 350 shipwrecks that are scattered among the reef formations, making it an ever changing, living museum under the sea. Another great way to see this amazing world is through a Glass Bottom Boat Tour, offered during the days and nights. And let’s not forget the endless array of the beautiful Bermuda beaches. With their pink sand and limestone dunes, you will find that the beaches on the south-shore are more scenic than those on the north-shore. The most popular, also the most crowded by tourists and locals is Horseshoe Bay Beach. Your best bet is to pick up “Bermuda’s Guide to Beaches and Transportation,” a free publication available at most hotels and in all Visitors Service Bureaus. It combines map and bus/ferry schedules, showing you the locations of the beaches and how to reach them.
Whether you are looking to visit a bustling city like the capitol of Hamilton, which offers plenty of shopping and sightseeing during the day; dinner, drinks and dancing by night to a lazy day on the beach, to the World Heritage Site and historic Town of St. George; Bermuda will cater to all of your needs. It can be a relaxed vacation destination or an international business center. It is a mix of ancient and new worlds, friendly people and there are so many things for you to take part in and enjoy. Whatever your desire, Bermuda is sure to welcome you.”

Marketing is one of those often neglected items. Many times spa owners view this as an expense rather than a revenue generating tool. You need to regularly review your current marketing efforts, and evaluate new options. However, to stay a step ahead of your competition you need to have the right marketing strategy.
The first thing you need to do is evaluate your current marketing program. Evaluate what is working and what is not. Figure out the actual cost versus the benefit of each type of marketing you are doing. Did the postcards work better than the radio ads? Did the free media attention from the grand opening get you lots of new customers? It’s easy to get sold on a particular advertising option, and one often forgets to evaluate the effectiveness of the program. If you signed a long contract for an advertising option that did not work, cancel it, if you can.
Don’t Underestimate Email Power
When you take your customers information, you should be taking not only their mailing address, but their email address as well. You may want to start a monthly email newsletter about your spa. Highlight a new procedure. Remind everyone that summer is coming, and that they need to get in for those hair removal treatments quickly. An occasional “Daily Specials” e-mail will allow you to respond to a lull in bookings by sending out a treatment special for the time slots you have available that same day.
Cross Marketing
Visit the health food store, jeweler, or the organic store and create a marketing program with them, offer discounts at each others stores. Remember, no one has too many customers, they will be happy you stopped by.
In the past many spas had a lot of success by cross marketing with hair salons. Just as long as your spa dose not offer any hair styling services, and the hair salon dose not offer any spa services, this can me a real great relationship that the two parties can really benefit from. Also make sure to give all the hair stylists in the hair salon that you are cross marketing with really good discounts on your services. This will get the hair stylists at the salon really excited and enthusiastic and your spa. Most hair stylists have a long list of clients that have been loyally coming to the hair stylist for years. These clients usually have developed a good level of trust with the hair stylist, so if the stylist makes a positive comment about your spa services to the client, you can be almost positive that this client will check out your spa the next time they are in the market for spa services.
Technology Power
When you opened your spa you most likely purchased a bookings management system. Are you using it to its full potential? These systems often allow you to run custom reports where you can see which treatment rooms are being under-utilized, and which clients haven’t been in the spa in a while. It may be time to check out the software vendors website to remind yourself of other productivity features which can help with your marketing efforts.
Network Locally
You need to be known in the community where you do business. It is important to contribute to local charities and events. If your customers are Generation X, then sponsor a little league team. If your customers are primarily baby boomers, you may want to be involved with local charities. Remember, most people do business with people they like. So networking gives you an opportunity to connect with many different people in a short period of time.
By using these tips, you should be able to grow your spa to that next level. You can’t just hang out a sign and expect people to run in, you are going to need to actively market your spa and be constantly aware of which options are working and which are not. Your marketing plan should be well documented and should always be analyzed and constantly evolving to keep you a step ahead of the competition.
