Did you know that stockings have been around for over eihgt hundred years? Hand-knitted 12th century stockings are displayed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. In 1589 Reverend William Lee from Nottingham, totally self-taught with no mechanical knowledge or expertise, invented the framework knitting machine, changing the face of fashion, and the legs of women, for ever!

The story goes that Reverend Lee fell in love with a young lady in his local village. Every time he visited her, his passion was crushed as all she did was to concentrate on her stocking knitting! Spurned the curate is said to have determined to design an automated knitting process so that hand knitting would become obsolete! It took him three years to work at this idea, giving up his curate’s position to devote himself wholeheartedly to the task.

After three years the stocking-weaving machine, made almost entirely of wood, was operational. It was a remarkable endeavor indeed as he was a curate with no formal mechanical training, and his tools were primitive. He had to overcome amazing technical challenges – for example the initial version of the machine had the needles stuck into a chunk of wood! Once his initial machine, said to be a 12 gauge and using wool, was working he trained his brother James and other relatives on the use of the loom.

Queen Elizabeth was known to love silk stockings so he travelled to London to ask for the patronage of the queen. His perseverance paid off and he was eventually granted an audience with the queen but when he demonstrated the machine to her, he was shocked as she did not offer the expected sponsorship. She was reputedly concerned that such mechanization of stocking manufacture in this way would put a large number of hand knitters of stockings out of work.

Feeling rejected, and at the suggestion of one Sully, a minister of Henry IV’s court, he travelled to Rouen in France in 1605. At this time Rouen was one of the most important centers of manufacture in France. All was working well – he had taken his brother and seven workmen, and with Henry IV’s patronage was mass manufacturing stockings for the first time, simultaneously using no less than nine looms. Then tragedy struck – Henry IV was murdered and with that went Lee’s protection. His privileges were withdrawn. Devastated he attempted to fight a case in the Paris courts but he failed. He died in Paris, broken-hearted and impoverished not long after.

However his brother along with seven workmen managed to escape France, bringing seven looms with them back to Thoroton in Nottinghamshire. There he set up a mill where Ashton, a workman who had formerly been trained by William Lee before his ill-fated departure, joined him. This area of Nottingham was ideal location for woolen stocking manufacture as the quality of the wool was better – the staple or cross-linking of the fibres made for a stronger yarn well suited to weaving.

Nottingham area became the hub for stocking production and from this point on stocking weaving became an important industry for England. Just as computer knowhow is guarded today, so was this state-of-the-art knowhow guarded back then – exporting a stocking loom was actually illegal. Anyone caught had their equipment confiscated and were fine the huge (back then) sum of forty pounds.

By the 18th Century frame-work knitting of stockings had come to America in a swathe from New England to Pennsylvania. From here on mechanization gathered pace – Patents were granted in England for the first circular knitting machine in 1816, and a machine for manufacture of full-fashioned stockings in 1857.

Stocking materials – the sexy nylon stocking is born

Gradually by the late 1800’s the use of wool gave way to cotton, and by 1929 the vast majority of stocking production was in silk. Then at Du Pont laboratories came Dr Wallace Carrothers momentous discovery – nylon! Carrothers was a brilliant polymer chemist with a rather turbulent private life that led to fits of depression. Nevertheless his development of what was initially known as polyamide 6-6 with its extremely high melting point revolutionized women’s lives!

At the end of the Second World War nylon manufacture was geared back to the mass production of nylons. The demand was enormous – in 1945 Macy’s sold out of its entire stock of 50,000 pairs of nylon stockings in six hours!

Stocking designs

The nylon seamed stockings were generally of the fully fashioned variety – that is the machine used to make then was designed to drop stitches where needed so that the leg was not simply a tube but was narrowed at the ankle and widened at the thigh. The flat material was therefore designed to fit the leg snugly, when wrapped and stitched down the back to produce the seam. As you may be aware, nylon hsa no natural stretch so it became necessary to manufacture stockings in a variety of foot length and leg lengths.

Until the end of the second world war stockings were in short supply. Because the tell-tale sign of a fully fashioned stocking is the back seam, so it was common for ladies to use an eyebrow pencil to create an artificial seam up the back of their leg to simulate a genuine stocking!

Seamless stockings

The invention of the circular stitching machine enabled the advent of seamless stockings which by 1950 had surpassed the seamed stocking in popularity. However sizing was still problematical &, because they have no stretch, the stockings tend to bag behind the knees and at the ankles with both the original seamed and newer seamless stockings from this time. This was all to change in 1959 when lycra, also known as spandex arrived. For the first time one size could fit a variety of legs, snugly and without bagging.

Pantyhose or stockings?

‘Swinging sixties gave stocking makers a bit of a problem – suddenly the welt of the stocking and often some thigh ws on show too. There was a brief time when stocking tops were frequently on show before pantyhose or tights took the hosiery world by storm. However it is the sensual nylon stocking that still holds the affection of most men – and an admittedly lesser percentage of women. The first time you have the opportunity to draw a fifties full-fashioned stocking up your leg I guarantee you will fall in love with these gorgeous nylons.

When a person develops yeast infection, it is often caused by an overproduction of yeast by the body. Normally, yeast in normal doses does not pose a health risk. There are varieties of yeast infection, and these are commonly found in the vagina, bowels, skin, and mouth.

A Quick Explanation on Candida Yeast Infection

When Candida grows inside the female body, particularly in the area of the female genitals such as the vagina and vulva, most patients feel burning and itchy sensations in the concerned areas. Candida is actually a fungus growth and it has been discovered to affect more than ¾ of all women, majority of which are recurring cases. The age of women commonly affected is between 16 and 35 years old.

You can begin to suspect excessive fungus growth or yeast infection if you begin having thick vaginal discharge. If this discharge is coupled with a disturbing feeling of itch and burning sensations, it could be a clear sign of an infection. Most women will discharge a white curd-like substance during mid-cycle, due mainly to increased estrogen levels.

Factors Affecting Systemic or Recurring Yeast Infection

There are mainly four types of Candida fungus which bring about Candidiasis or yeast infection. The most frequent type of fungus growth is brought about by Candida Albicans. 80 percent of yeast infections in the vagina are caused by Candida Albicans. Candida Glabrata, Candida Tropicalis, and Candida Krusei are the three other varieties of Candida. These fungi are typically found in the vagina and the intestines. When this fungus starts to develop rapidly, yeast infection occurs.

The following common symptoms are presenting patients with yeast infection:

? Discharge from the vagina, though not too often
? Bad smelling vagina
? Feelings of burning, itchiness and pain in the vagina
? Uncomfortable and painful urination and intercourse
? Thick, grey-colored or white discharge
? Cottage cheese consistency of the discharge

Successful Ways You Can Prevent Yeast Infection

As much as possible choose cotton undergarments. It should not be too tight moreover, so as to keep the body dry and comfortable.

You need to stop wearing pantyhose, since this is often a cause for yeast fungus overgrowth. This is because tight pantyhose keep moisture at high levels, allowing the multiplication of the Candida fungus.

Keep away from wearing too-tight pants and as much as possible, wear skirts most of the time.

If you are doing bowels or urinating, remember to wipe yourself from front to back. Remember that yeast infection can also start in the intestines.

Try eating yogurt as a part of your diet. This has live cultured bacteria to help fight off infection in the body.

Minimize eating foods which are high in sugar. You can lessen your risk of getting infection again by as high as 90%.

In order to maintain the balance in your body, stay away from steroidal medications and other antibiotics.

Fortunately, many types of Candida infection can be treated within 12 hours, with the aid of special diets, ingestion of probiotics and the use of anti-fungal medications. Natural homeopathic medications can also be effective for recurring fungal infections. It is highly recommended that you follow the suggestions of medical professionals in finding the best possible solution for your yeast infection.

Why suffer through Candida infections if you can adopt the right steps in successful and natural-based treatments? Now you can achieve the cure for an uncomfortable and painful bout with yeast infection.

If you are attending for a job interview then you will want to ensure that you give yourself the best chance of success.  You’ll certainly have brushed up on any questions you may be asked about your experience and qualifications for the job.

However if your qualifications and abilities are the same as the next applicant it will be your appearance that can tip the balance in your favour.   This article will offer you helpful guidelines to ensure that your appearance will work for you at that all important job interview.

You only have one chance at making a first impression, so your first impression needs to be entirely favourable.

General dress style
You need to be sensitive to the job role for which you are applying.  For example should you be applying for the role of personal assistant to a managing director you need to tailor your appearance to exude an air of efficiency and smartness.  However if you are applying to an independent record company that promotes hip-hop and garage music your dress style should be entirely different.

So do your homework – know what sort of dress style will typify the indurecty for which you are applying and copy it.  However one very useful tip is to avoid extremes – don’t outdress the interviewer!  Imagine applying to a female office manager – if your outfit looks a million dollars and she is wearing standard work clothes, your chances are slim right from the outset.  You should always aim for neatness but neutrality.

Shoes for your interview
Many interviewers look at the interviewee’s shoes before anything else and will judge accordingly – so your shoes must be clean.  Don’t go for stilettos with ultra high heels – aim for your outfit to be neat but not dramatic.

Ladies – what outerwear should you select for your job interview
Many organisations commonly dress down and jeans and casual wear is acceptable on a day-to-day basis.  However you are trying to ensure that your first impression is better than those competing for the same job so as a general guide look to wear a neat combination of blouse and skirt.

If you are plus size then stick to darker colors and away from vibrant large patterns – you are not auditioning to be a set of sixties floral curtains!  Stripes will work and be flattering if they are vertical – steer clear of horizontal stripes

Tights or stockings
Apparently sales of pantyhose and stockings has been dropping over the past few years as more women choose not to have their legs covered.  If you do wear a skirt for your job interview as recommended then it is essential to wear nylon stockings or pantyhose.  Pantyhose or stockings will finish your outfit and flatter your legs as well, hiding any blemishes and giving an ‘artificial tan’ to pale legs.  Keep the look restrained – neutral to dark shades, and avoid vibrant colors or patterns.

Choosing lingerie for your job interview
No, this is not a joke, lingerie can make a difference.  If you feel your underwear fits well, and looks good (even though you’re the only one to know), then you will behave more confidently.

Outerwear
As already mentioned, you will need to decide on an appropriate outfit in relation to the type of job for which you are.  Aim for simple elegance; you do not want to appear sloppy to a prospective employer.  However it is not a good move to make your interviewer feel you are significantly better dressed than they are!  A smart suit, ideally with a skirt and not pants.  Yes we are in the twenty first century, but some employers are old-fashioned!  If you don’t like the advice, ask yourself how badly you really want the job?  If wearing a skirt gives you a fractional edge over another interviewee then it will have been worth the effort.

Perfume
I’d recommend minimal perfume.  A scent which you may like might be overpowering to someone else if they happen to have a really keen sense of smell, and some people are actually allergic to certain perfumes and smells.  Less is certainly more in this instance.

Nails
Clean nails are of course essential, and natural varnish or a restrained color is your best bet.  There are very few occupations where the possession of long talons will either impress or be an asset; they can result in the wrong keys being hit on keyboards, and in a health care environment for example they can even be a health hazard. Short and neat is best.

Body language at an interview
Body language is very powerful, and you can these tricks to get the interviewer on your side without them even being aware of it.

A firm handshake, whilst looking the interviewer in the eye with a natural confident smile will instantly put you ahead of the pack.

Subtly mirror the posture of your interviewer and they will instantly warm to you…and not be aware why!  On the other hand sitting with arms tightly folder is a very contained, shy posture and will give off the wrong signals.

Finally, make sure you’ve done your homework on the company before you attend.  Asking one or two intelligent questions that shows that you have an awareness of the business always creates a good impression.

Good luck with your interview!

Do you suffer from recurring vaginal or male yeast infection? below is a home remedy or yeast infection treatment for men and women.

But first, what causes yeast infection? It is caused by a fungus named Candida Albicans. Yeast is a tiny organism that lives in small numbers on the skin and in the vagina. When the acidic balance in the vagina is lowered, the yeast grows and causes a vaginal infection.

Yeast infection symptoms are not serious but are very unpleasant. They include a thick white discharge from the vagina. Burning during urination, vaginal itching, irritation, redness and swelling. Irritation, soreness and white spots on the penis.

One of the main causes of recurring yeast infection is sexual activity. If a woman with yeast infection has unprotected sex, her partner can contract the infection. Since alot of men do not even know they are infected as they do not show any visible symptoms right away. The woman can treat her infection only to contract it again from her partner. Thus the recurring yeast infection can go on until the male notices symptoms.

One of the best home remedies for treating yeast infection is dabbing apple cider vinegar mixed with garlic and water to dilute the vinegar. The vinegar stops the yeast from growing while the garlic stops the itching.

Tips on preventing yeast infection.

1. Do not wear tight clothes.

2. Wear cotton underwear.

3. Removing your swimsuit right after swimming.

4. Do not wear a sanitary pad longer than your period.

5. Do not use deodorant tampons or pads.

6. Always dry the vulva area adequately after swimming or bathing.-a blow dryer set on cool to ensure your genital area is dry.

7. Try not to wear pantyhose every day.

8. For the men use a condom but not a nonoxynol-9 lubricated kind.

Although it is impossible to totally prevent a vaginal yeast infection. Using these tips can create a vaginal environment which can slow down the causes of recurring yeast infection

By far the funniest or craziest thing I have ever seen on a home inspection was back in 1999 when I was inspecting a house in Charlotte NC near Garinger High School.  On this particular inspection everybody was there including the buyer, seller, buyer’ agent, seller’s agent, an uncle, an aunt, some kids, and a dog whose ownership I was not sure of.  Anyway I am inspecting the crawl space of this house doing my usual circular crawl when coming back down the back stretch my flashlight beam caught something odd.   It was hair and some dingy looking fleshy colored skin maybe.  I thought Oh my God!  It’s a body.  As I got closer, I noticed it was a body alright but not won that was ever alive.  It was a deflated inflate-a-mate doll!  I pulled that doll out of the crawlspace and with everyone looking announced that someone’s missing her.  Everybody laughed except the seller.  I ask him if he had anything he would like to share but thought better of it.

Once I was inspecting an old Queen Anne House built in Dilworth around 1902.  One thing for sure when inspecting a house this old, you can’t go back on the builder.   Anyway while inspecting this beautiful old house the seller was following me around everywhere.  Home Inspectors hate this because it’s hard to focus.  I mean I actually ask him to leave the bathroom once as I really had to use it and I really didn’t know him all that well.  Well anyway since I couldn’t shake I thought I might as well talk to him.  Since this was a really old house and every other one I had inspected had rumors of the supernatural I thought of something to talk to him about.  I asked him if they had any ghosts.  He didn’t say anything.  I reassured him that we don’t put anything like that on our report.  He still didn’t say anything.  Finally I said “You know in most cases they say that ghosts make the house more valuable.”   He said “Well in that case we have five”

I have also seen many crazy repairs and improvisations including automotive hoses used for plumbing lines.  I have seen duct tape used for just about everything including patching holes and cracks in the tub.  One seller in Huntersville used pantyhose for supports for all the ductwork under the house.  That was very creative but not very durable.  They all had runs in them.  I have seen a garbage can used for a rain cap on a chimney.  Now that is creative.  I’ll bet his neighbor has been wondering where his garbage can got too.  Basically I want to say that in a lot of places creativity is good thing, unfortunately home repair isn’t one of them.

No collection of home inspection stories would be complete without the snake sightings.  I have seen many.  There is one house I have to inspect yearly that has so many snake skins under it that I take my dog with me.  I hate going under that house.  I will only go after I have had a strong drink and I can take my dog.   I have seen many snakes including one hit with my flash light and then he proceeded to come after me.  I have seen them in all different parts of the crawl, attic and around the house.  Once on a million dollar house in Piper Glenn I moved some firewood to get to an outlet.  I went to get another log and almost grabbed the fattest copperhead I have ever seen.  I screamed like a little girl.  The scariest snake experience came from a house I was inspecting once near Carowinds.  We home inspectors always pull the insulation back at front dirt filled porches because this is a hotspot for damage.  At this house I pulled the insulation back and a snake feel on my arms.  I freaked out. I liked like Scooby Doo and Shaggy with all four limbs circling like wheels to get out of there.  Once out the real estate agent asked me about the snake and I told them “You know that saying that they are more afraid of you than you are of them, well that is a lie!”

This is only the tip of the iceberg of stuff I have seen during inspections.  I have said Jeff Foxworthy should ride around with me for awhile and he would have plenty of material.  For more information about home inspections please go to http://www.homeinspectioncarolina.com or visit my blog at http://www.askthecharlotteinspector.com

If you would like to know how to get rid of a UTI, there are many home remedies which you can use. Indeed, treating a UTI naturally is becoming known to be a very effective and fast way of eradicating this painful condition.

Most people now accept that treating all manner of conditions naturally is often better than using antibiotics or over the counter remedies which can be very expensive and often not very effective. Antibiotics work by killing off all types of bacteria and cannot distinguish between the beneficial types and the bad types which can cause infection-both of which are naturally present within the human body. This means that the natural balance of the body can be upset. This can cause other conditions such as yeast infections and digestive problems as a direct result of taking antibiotics. In addition as we as a population become more and more reliant on antibiotics, doctors are finding that they are needing to prescribe stronger antibiotics as diseases are becoming increasingly resistant to antibiotics.

Many alternative practitioners are now advocating ways of treating UTI naturally and many give advice on how to get rid of a UTI. These methods are often common sense approaches but nevertheless can help to give some symptomatic relief and can even help to cure milder infections.

* Drink plenty of water-around 6-8 glasses daily is ideal

* Try 2 glasses of unsweetened cranberry juice daily

* Place a heated pad or hot water bottle on the abdomen

* Avoid drinking tea, coffee or alcohol

* Wear only cotton panties

* Do not wear tight trousers or pantyhose

* Avoid using perfumed products around the vaginal area

* Take a daily vitamin C tablet to help strengthen the immune system

* Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables

* Try eating a pot of live natural yogurt daily

* Avoid products with a high sugar content as sugar can fuel the growth of bacteria

If you would like to see how to get rid of a UTI naturally, without using antibiotics, there is a completely natural method which is guaranteed to get rid of the symptoms of a UTI very quickly. The pain will begin to go within a few short minutes and in most cases, you will be completely pain free by the next day. This system of treating UTI naturally works by strengthening, enhancing and supporting the body’s own ability to heal but at the same time, uses a highly effective natural ingredient which targets the infection like a laser. This method is completely safe for children, adults and can also be used with confidence by pregnant women and the elderly. It is also safe for people who are taking other medication. Retro styling – these days the term is being applied to everything from clothing to furnishing the home. The name retro comes from the Latin meaning ‘backwards’. This article is concerned with retro lingerie, or to be more specific retro shapewear.

Although most of the comments that follow describe the sleek chic girdles from the fifties and sixties, they can equally apply to today’s girdles that are based on the original designs.

The war years were years of austerity and women on both sides of the channel dressed for comfort, to help the war effort. Women, eager to attract partners at the end of the war, so fashions reflected this desire. Couture house Christian Dior came up with styling needing a sleek, chic silhouettes. Now girdles, corsets or corselets became essential. Suddenly all women wore girdles, and not just women either – all the shapewear manufacturers targeted not just women but teens as well. A variety of girdles for the young adult were produced. Probably the teen girdle that gained the maximum coverage, in more than one sense, was the panty girdle – a tight-fitting cross between a girdle that held the tummy in and one that protected the wearer from advances, whether unwelcome of otherwise!

The girdle had several functions – to give that sleek chic silhouette to the wearer and to hold up the nylon stockings. Girdles generally had a minimum of two pairs of garter clips. There are two at the front and two garter clips, usually slightly offset from the rear. The garters are offset so that when the girdle wearer sits down they do not have to sit directly on the clips! The open bottom girdles usually have the garter clips on elastic straps, which is useful in keeping the nylon stockings taught as the wearer moves about, sitting and standing. The nylon stockings from the fifties did not have spandex or lycra and were non-stretch; without the elastic of the garter strap the stocking would ‘bag’ as the wearer stood up.

The panty girdle, and particularly the long-leg panty girdle often has the garter tab attached directly to the girdle itself. The long-leg panty girdle legs usually completely overlap and cover the stocking-welt, losing the gap of bare thigh above the stocking top. Men usually find the flash of bare thigh and garter strap exciting; however, a long leg panty girdle, although practical, hides all this and has consequently been described (along with pantyhose) as a “passion killer”.

Girdle materials Modern and retro girdles usually feature spandex or Lycra for elasticity, but the original girdles dating from around the 1930s usually used rubber to give stretch. The introduction of rubber was a major step in corsetry – the ultra-rigid corset had suddenly become more flexible. In parallel with its introduction the terms associated with such items of clothing also metamorphosed: from the original corset, the term roll-on came into vogue, particularly in the USA, then came the step-in and the corselette, often known as the ‘all in one’.

Indeed for a while Playtex marketed a girdle molded from pure latex – these have become quite the collectors item these days, partly because of rarity value. Pure latex deteriorates over time and the garment then perishes, so few remain in good condition. It is interesting to know whether the common latex allergy affected wearers, but whatever the reason, these girdles are no longer manufactured by Playtex.

Retro shapewear share the same objective as vintage shapewear did, namely to sculpt the shape of the body. Elasticity can help to hold and control figures but for more rigid control a variety of ‘bones’ have been used over the years. The original whalebone corset did actually use whale baleen – which are the cartilage-like “teeth” which whales use to filter plankton. Each baleen is enormous, around ten inches wide and ten to twelve feet long. It proved an ideal material for corset makers because it consisted of parallel fibres that could be relatively easily split into thin strips; these strips could be shaped by heating them over steam and when they cooled they held their shape. Of course the demise of the whale population led to the supply becoming an issue. Fortunately other alternatives proved suitable – manmade plastics like celluloid, and even flattened steel springs!

Historic background to the corset The forerunner of the girdle was the corset, and that had its origins further back still in ladies stays. Indeed there is archaelogical evidence going back to 3000BC showing women with waists cinched in tightly by a garment that appears ribbed. It was around the fourteenth century that women started wearing a stiffened linen undergarment garment, laced in at the front or back, and by the fifteenth century these ’stays’ were relatively common; the probable derivation of the English corset from bodice (’bodies’) to the French translation of this ‘corps’ which transmuted back to corset. The original corsets were made by stitching together two layers of linen with a paste in the middle of the ’sandwich’ to provide stiffening. By the 16th century corset makers had turned to using whalebone (actually more correctly called baleen) to offer the stiffening. This provided more rigidity than the earlier paste corsets.

By 1940, in both America and Europe, the corset had given way to the girdle, worn in conjunction with a bra.

After the fifties came the swinging sixties, when women were exhorted to burn their bras and stop wearing such restrictive underwear. But as with all fashion, girdle wearing has now gone full circle. Burlesque artists have made the ‘art of tease’ in which girdles, basques and corsets are on show, into popular entertainment. Wonderbra have enticed the burlesque star Dita von Teese to design, model and market a range of retro girdles and bras based on fifties designs.

The burlesque art form is now burgeoning and the esteemed Royal Festival Hall held the worlds largest burlesque lesson in January 2009, evidencing how mainstream this art has become. Original fifties girdles, corsets and basques are found in specialist online lingerie boutiques or vintage stores, but to satisfy the demand all sorts of outlets have now sprung up to satisfy the demands of burlesque. These shops and online stores invariably turn to the forties and fifties for styling inspiration for their retro shapewear – and the biggest item that seems to be in demand is the corset. Fashion really has returned to its roots.
